You can spread out the tarot cards just about anywhere, but that doesn’t mean that everywhere is conducive to a good tarot reading. In fact, some environments can make it nearly impossible to do a clear, focused, and accurate reading. A messy, chaotic, and disorganized reading space, for example, is very likely to give you results that are…well…messy, chaotic, and disorganized. To ensure the best and most accurate reading possible, make sure you’re working in a calm environment where you feel clearheaded. And, for that little extra boost to your reading, add in a few atmospheric touches.
Cleanse the Space
The space in which you choose to read should be cleansed from all negative energy. You can easily cleanse a room through performing some kind of cleansing ritual. These rituals serve two purposes. First, they actually do rid the space of negative energies. Secondly, the physical act of cleansing allows you to gain control over the reading and the space and can serve as a physical cue to everyone that a clean, safe space has been created. While you can certainly come up with your own cleansing ritual, some common ones include:
- Opening and closing doors and windows
- Lighting a candle (different color candles hold different significance in readings)
- Lighting incense
- Sprinkling water around the space
- Sprinkling flower petals
Designate a Table
Whenever you do a reading, you need a wide, sturdy surface, like a table, on which to work. Make sure your table gives you ample room to move the cards about freely. After all, you want to be able to focus on your reading completely instead of worrying about having enough space or feeling cramped. For best results, use this table only for tarot readings. Readings typically don’t feel very special if you’re holding them at the same place where you enjoy your meals. If you have a designated spot that’s just for tarot readings, however, you’ll instantly get ‘in the zone” when you sit down to it and will be ready for a reading.
Section off the Reading Space
If you’re like most people, then you probably don’t have an entire room that you can dedicate to reading. That’s okay though; all you really need is a special space. You can section off your reading space using colorful blankets or cloth. Standing screens also work well for designating a given corner or spot as a “reading space,” and you can find them in mystical decorations and styles that will lend to the magical atmosphere.
Cleanse Your Deck
Finally, just as you’ve cleansed your reading space, you also want to cleanse the tarot deck itself. Tarot cards can retain energy, including negative energy, from each reading, which can skew your results and leave you vulnerable. Rid your deck of the weight of past readings by placing a candle at each corner for a few minutes prior to a reading. The belief is that the candles will draw out the negative energy and “freshen” the deck.
Remember, where you choose to read is important, so take a few extra steps to get your reading space just right!
